‘Monster Hunters’: Our 2022 Theme

The premise for Hoadley Hide 2022: Monster Hunters, is that the Venturers are transported to a medieval village where the inhabitants are being attacked by hoards of ferocious monsters!

Venturers will begin on Friday morning by familiarising themselves with the forest area through participation in a rogaining activity. They will then be welcomed into the Hoadley Hide M.O.N.S.T.E.R Hunters Guild where they will earn their shields and cook a hearty meal in preparation for the coming days of hard work fighting and capturing the monsters!

Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, they will travel around the village, help the villagers rid their businesses and homes of monsters and hopefully restore peace to the village once more. 

On Sunday night they’ll celebrate their successes and party to their heart’s content at Monster Mash party and the enjoy a complimentary banquet meal.

Monday will see the final scores revealed and the winners of the Hide announced at the final parade!

Finally the Venturers shall bid farewell to M.O.N.S.T.E.R Hunters Guild and head home with many stories to tell of their monster hunting glory and with lots of new friends.

OAS Requirements

Each stunt will be based around some kind of initiative based or outdoor adventure skills activity; be it a first aid challenge, a navigation challenge, a rescue, night work, decoding or water incident, etc.

The stunt must be designed so as to occupy the entire team in a challenging activity for approximately 20 minutes, ideally with the capacity to cater for multiple teams at once. For each stunt site, we have given a suggestion of a suitable initiative challenge, taking into account what’s available at each site, and making sure there is a variety of stunt types.

We will release a list of stunt synopsises soon, your rover unit will be able to select which one they would like to run. Your nominated stunt leader will receive more detailed information about your chosen stunt in the lead up to the event.

Each Venturer Scout is required to participate fully in the planning and execution of each stunt activity.
In previous years, Hoadley Hide has provided venturers the opportunity to achieve their VA Initiative badge.

Initiative in Venturer Scout language is a self-starting power, an ability to get up and go without being told what to do. It requires resourcefulness, working out what the problem is, problem solving, implementing and reviewing.

An Initiative activity is designed to enable Venturer Scouts to develop, practice and test their initiative and should be a definite test of planning, organising, self-reliance and determination.

Ways to theme your Stunt & Making it more of an Experience

There are lots of ways to add character to your stunt and make it a real experience as part of the overall theme: play theme music over speakers, Create props, have costumes that tie in to the story; all these will assist with the story and theming of your stunt.

The end goal is for it to be an immersive experience for the Venturers – they should feel like they really travelled back in time to a Medieval village overrun by monsters! Don’t forget, Venturers will be voting each night for their “Best Stunt” which will be a large contributor to the overall Best Stunt awards, so make it as fun and entertaining as possible!

Must-Have Equipment for each stunt:

  • Garbage bin (We will provide bags)
  • Undercover place for Venturer Packs to be placed, such as a shelter and a tarp on the ground
  • Benches/chairs (for sitting)
  • Table (for sign-in, scoring, etc. – a small pop-up gazebo is ideal as well)
  • Clock or watch for telling time
  • Water-Filling Station, at least 20L (for Venturers to fill water bottles, HHMT can refill when required)
  • Esky to store packed lunch (HHMT will supply ice if forcasted temp is above 20°C)

The Hoadley Hide team will provide each stunt with:

  • Score sheet pads
  • Stunt stickers to place in each team’s “passport” when they complete the stunt
  • Garbage bags
  • A radio (to be signed out from HQ each morning and signed back in each night)
  • Packed lunch

Site Visits

We will be running two site visits at Mataranka Scout Camp in the lead up to the event, commencing at 11am and finishing at 2pm.

Dates: Saturday 19th February 2022, Saturday 19th March 2022

These site visits are a good opportunity for some members of your stunt team to see the site you will be using before setting up.
